Article by Wesley Mccormick
She’s an authentic singer/songwriter, and partner of World Live Music Group a successful recording label and distribution company located in prime time Manhattan. Her success didn’t come handed over, neither did her business savvy skills. She’s the marketing and brand executive at her company with a roster of over 20 independent and post major artist. Her development in the music industry started at a young age. Around 9 years old, she was touring with Hip-Hop mogul, Rakim whose success stems from the 1980′s, promoting some of the hottest NBA brands and riding in the limousines catered to the Multi-Million dollar platinum selling all girl group, Destiny’s Child. The experience of being an independent artist started from the age of 15 y/o. While in high school, she was honing and developing her skills in a photography studio in Rosedale, NY. She learned business management from her mentor, written over 1000 songs and still scored a 3.9 GPA. Her business senses kicked in when she learned client-management skills. She took up photography and lighting, studied under the most creative and experienced videographers, and directed several short films with colleagues she admired.
Her focus was music, with her first solo, independent album “Cupid” which was recorded and mastered in her home, which she saw success on an international scale, which was enough to fuel her passion to continue. Kino Kiongivi was always known in her community as the singer that would “make it big”, but circumstances proved her dreams wouldn’t be so quick to come true. She is a the daughter of a widow and a WW2 Veteran, as her father was a chief piolit in the Korean War who passed away at childbirth. These factors greatly influenced the outcome. Her saving grace was her ability to develop clear business ideas. Once, she was exposed to the business side of music, she inadvertently put her career on pause to grow her business as she knew this would be the determining factor for survival. Her status as a leader in her community was honorably exposed as she supported many non-violence groups fighting against gun activity. With over 300 concerts under her belt, she began developing and producing local talent for mix tapes and albums in the Rap, Hip Hop and R&B genres.
Kino Kiongivi began to brand and market groups and artist in the New York City area. She worked with independent and major record labels as a freelance branding expert to guide and influence the image of artist in cue for consideration of record deals. She was successful in those areas, and after sharing her talent, she was encouraged to develop and continue those services as a part of her career. This combination created the legal entity World Live Music Group, WLM Digital, World Live Music and Distribution and World Live Music Kids and Teens. Each division of her company is overseen alongside her partner Sean Guerrier De Bey, a former Universal Music Group executive whose experience stretches as far as the Rihanna “Pon De Replay” project, the Ne-Yo ” In My Own Words” project and the LL Cool J Def Jam projects and the Emancipation of MIMI project with Def Jam / Island Recordings. The team has expanded their company with a staff capable of handling the normal day to day activities of a properly functioning record label.
The future of music lies in the hands of the experienced, the free, the capable and the creative. A mindset that isn’t afraid to create new barriers while maintaining the structure that started the organic music industry. “We merge strategy, common business sense and general lifestyle marketing to gain results” she adds. A reminder that fans dictate the acceptance of a record, artist and whether they invite them to grow along side is also a considerable measure. The company hopes to build strong alliances with competent and managerial music company’s. “We will continue to develop and structure brands that fit into the lifestyles of our listeners and viewers and promote and sponsor opportunities that help the independent artist grow and succeed, such as the Madison Square Garden concert were producing. ” emotes Ms. Kiongivi.
